SUV needs to have SUV winter tyres mounted for safe winter driving

All vehicles need winter tyres for winter driving. There aren’t really any exceptions. SUVs tyres look more rugged and can be mistaken for tyres that would be able to cope with snow and ice, but unfortunately this is not the case. The rubber in SUV summer tyres will become hard, as the rubber compound nor the tread pattern are not designed for cold temperatures and winter conditions. Some of the tyres grip comes from the ability to conform to the road surface and interlock with the surface in the way that the rubber is pushed into micro-cavities in the surface. When the tyres are hard this won’t happen.

Winter tyres are designed for cold weather and for having good grip on snow and ice. They also have a rubber compound that keeps them soft and agile at low temperatures. Their tread pattern is specially designed to handle the snow and create the grip on ice. Studded tyres will use metal studs protruding from the tread that are used as a way to create superior grip on ice. For SUV non-studded tyres they will use grip particles and innovative design in the tread to generate the grip on ice. When you try to drive with summer tyres, you have nothing that will generate the extra grip needed, the tread pattern and the rubber compound is different than you need in wintertime.

It is important that you mount you SUV winter tyres on your SUV in time before the snow hits the streets. You need to have them mounted before the winter weather arrives for you to stay safe while driving. The SUV winter tyres will outperform SUV summer tyres already as the temperature drops below zero degrees Celsius, so change early.
